Studio Remodel

There are still small details to add – new rug, throw pillows, new chairs, window treatment – but I couldn’t help but take a few photos of our ‘new’ studio space! We’ve moved one door over and consolidated our space with Blackwood Media Group. It took a lot of brainstorming to figure out how to best utilize the area, and we felt like the metal wall/divider was just about perfect. On the other side of it (in the dark abyss) is where Nathan and I work and edit, along with the Blackwood friends – Justin, Aaron, Nicole and Chris.

This is one of the first rooms I’ve ever designed without any specific inspiration, so I’m pretty ecstatic that the vision in my head actually matches how it turned out. Between the sheet metal wall, painting the walls, staining the wood, refinishing the coffee table, hanging the photos, and buying the bulbs and cages we still pulled it all off at a cost of a couple hundred dollars. The only high price paid was labor, and without Justin and Aaron I’d probably be still in the planning stages. A huge thanks to both of them. Aaron particularly helped by shooting down all my terrible ideas, and not strangling me.

We’re planning to do more to the rest of the room as well, so more pictures will follow in the future.

So, who’s ready for a consultation?

P.S.  If anyone thinks they know the prefect rug for this space, please leave me a comment and let me know! I’ve been scouring West Elm, Pinterest, Urban Outfitters, Ikea and I really haven’t found the perfect one yet.

Such a cool space! The photos hanging from the wood is such a nice touch! About the rug, I highly recommend you check here: http://www.gilt.com/home/category/area-rugs

Check Home Depot for rugs… Surprisingly, Colin and I found our nice rug there this past fall. Great prices too.

Rowan in Bloom.

We are taking full advantage of the spring and getting ourselves outside as much as possible with the little dude. Not that he was driving us crazy in close quarters or anything…

Here are some my favorites from the last three months.

Kyle + Jennifer | Downtown Dubuque Engagement

Stored up in my brain there are always a dozen or so locations where I’d like to do portrait sessions, and I finally crossed off one that had been up there for a long time. Downtown Dubuque is constantly in a state of transition as the renovations continue, and I love finding the newly built as well as the newly demolished. As well as great locations, I was lucky to get some awesome clients and gorgeous weather for this one. 3/3!

Great pics of beautiful couple!

Steve + Colleen | Loras College Engagement

These two met at Loras College here in Dubuque, so their their alma mater seemed like a natural setting for their engagement photos. I hadn’t shot on the grounds in over four years, so it was great to walk around with fresh eyes and find pockets that matched my vision. Steve and Colleen, as you’ll see below, seem to like each other alright. It was much harder to get the serious shots than the ‘crack-up’ ones.

Great light, interesting compositions, beautiful expressions. You get an A.

Mark + Katie | dubuque engagement photography

Iowa has had a pretty mild winter this year, but the day Mark and Katie’s engagements rolled around there just happened to be a windchill of 2 degrees! We decided that rescheduling was for sissies, and went for it – lasting a full 30 minutes out in the blistering cold before rushing back to our heated vehicles and heading into town in search of warmer places. This session was full of laughs and funny trying-to-get-warm dances.

I think I even wore a jacket while editing these.

Oh, Mark and Katie happen to be my 100th wedding clients, which I happen to think is pretty darn cool. *high five*
